REMO FLUORESCENTE

BIENNALE 2024

About

01 about

A Vivid Celebration of Culture and Heritage

In an extraordinary display of art, culture, and societal introspection, the 2024 Venice Biennale on its opening day debuted "Remo Fluorescente”. Conceived by 2 autodidact artistic collaborators who stay anonymous, this project introduces a luminous transformation to the traditional Venetian gondola oar, symbolising the vibrant interplay of direction, pace, and control across both temporal and spatial dimensions.

"Remo Fluorescente" stands as a beacon of innovation, crafted by two self-taught artists whose own journeys of migration to Venice deeply inform their creative process. Their art reflects a profound connection to Venice’s rich cultural and social fabric, embracing the city's historical roots while fostering a dialogue around tolerance and cultural integration.

The project highlights the oar's symbolic essence as a guiding force and a stabiliser, much like the artists' experiences of finding their place in a new world. It is not only a navigational tool but also a metaphorical gift to future generations, promising guidance, brilliance, and hope.

The unveiling of "Remo Fluorescente" was a public spectacle on the opening day of the Venice Biennale 2024, culminating in the oar's transformation into a radiant artifact. This significant piece was publicly presented to a youth representative, symbolising the transfer of knowledge and cultural legacy.

Additionally, it will grace the courtyard of Palazzo Widmann, juxtaposed against a backdrop of modern architecture designed by Milanese architect Federico Pompignoli, notable also for his work with Rem Koolhaas at the Fondazione Prada in Milan and the Austrian House.

The artwork not only celebrates the innovative spirit of Venice but also embraces the historical and ongoing contributions of its diverse population. "Remo Fluorescente" invites visitors and locals alike to reflect on the paths we navigate, the light we can hold, and the future we shape together.
